A friend wanted to know how to connect to my Linux server via SSH but PuTTY doesn’t provide an easy way to transfer files. Fortunately, FileZilla allows you to connect to SFTP servers and the client is available on the major operating systems. recordMyDesktop is a solid screen capturing program for Linux but one of its cons is with .OGG/OGV format you get after export. Fortunately, there are several methods in Ubuntu 14.04 and other versions to convert the files into a format that video editors like.
Convert .OGV files to .MP4
There are several transcoding programs you can use but in Ubuntu 14.04 and Elementary OS I’ve had limited (absolutely zero) success with the transcoders I’ve tried. However, its possible to use OpenShot to convert files to several different formats including .MP4.
1.) First, download the latest build of OpenShot:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:openshot.developers/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install openshot openshot-doc
2.) Next, create a new project and import the .OGV clip
3.) Drag the clip into Track #1 or #2
4.) Navigate to File+Export Video (or CTRL+E)
5.) Use these settings:
6.) Click Export Video and let it grind out the .MP4
Convert .OGV files to .AVI
This can be done with OpenShot but its much easier to just use mencoder from the command line.
1.) Open a terminal window
2.) CD to the directory containing your .OGV file
3.) Copy & paste “mencoder -idx input.ogv -o out.avi -oac mp3lame -ovc lavc” without the quotation marks and replacing “input.ogv” with your file nameRead More
